Abstract:Accelerated intersection reconstruction requires that all phases of the construction process be well-planned and included in the list of activities that must be completed prerequisite to reopening the intersection to the traveling public. Consequently, accelerated intersection - reconstruction includes an integrated effort to forge a team consisting of design, construction, and construction management expertise that can uniquely coordinate all construction-related activities in a timely and efficient manner. Concrete mixtures can be "qualified" relative to their capability to meet curing requirements stipulated by the construction schedule for the anticipated weather conditions at the time of construction. Proper planning and execution in the design stages will help minimize change orders during construction due to changes in the traffic phasing scheme and the impact of the construction upon the traveling public. Guidelines are provided to facilitate the overall planning and execution process.
