Abstract:Previous research and commercial pilot tests have demonstrated that wireless onboard bearing and wheel monitoring have significant advantages in detecting and predicting defect conditions, including improved sensitivity, accuracy, and early-stage warnings that enable preventive maintenance. The project described in this report aims to produce a compact, modular, and flexible onboard system specifically designed to enable research into techniques such as: (a) improved sampling rates and processing, (b) data fusion from multiple bearings to improve accuracy and detect more types of hazards, (c) more efficient communication protocols leading to extended battery life, and (d) comparison of multiple energy harvesting methods. In this project phase, the primary focus was development of hardware, leading to a design that is small (64mm × 32mm × 20mm, exclusive of battery), with interchangeable modules for communications using different frequency bands and formats, as well as improved resolution, memory, and computation capacity compared to earlier devices.
