Abstract:A discrete-element method of analysis for transverse vibration of beam columns resting on linearly or nonlinearly-elastic, or nonlinearly-inelastic, supports is presented. The applied forces include static fixed loads and time dependent dynamic loads. The program is an extension of programs BMCOL 43 (Research Report No. 56-4) and DBCI (Research Report No. 56-8) to cover inelastic supports and time-dependent axial thrusts. Two multi-element models are used to simulate the inelastic characteristics of supports, one which allows the beam to lift off the support when it deflects, upward or downward, and the other which considers the resistance to either upward or downward deflection. An internal damping factor, which is related to the first derivative with respect to time of the curvature of the beam, has been included, in addition to the conventional external viscous damping factor.
