Abstract:The purpose of surveying residents near an existing urban freeway was to obtain their experiences and opinions concerning its location and design and its effect upon people living nearby. The Katy Freeway in Houston was selected as the study area for the following reasons: (1) it had three major designs - below grade (depressed), on grade, and above grade (elevated); (2) it passed through an established residential neighborhood; and (3) it had been in operation long enough (since December, 1968) to produce some "after" effects but not too long to obliterate "before" period impressions.
