Abstract:This report is an introduction to the type of traffic signal control system that may be used in urban areas where "realtime" control of traffic adaptive, system is justified. The system described in the report is a step beyond current real time systems such as SCOOT and SCAT. The traffic control strategy described is known as ARTC or Area-wide Real-time Traffic Control system and is an advanced design of network traffic control which uses "smart" controllers as each intersection and a regional of centralized control system. The system is designed to be both responsive to the traffic at each individual intersection from feeding congestion levels of traffic to those parts of the network which do not have the capacity to handle the traffic. The system is described in this report.
