Abstract:In order to properly design highway pavements, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) gathers traffic data with piezoelectric classification sensors. Use of these sensors includes the use of polymer binding materials to install the sensors in the pavement. In the past, the polymer being used by Tx.DOT proved to be inadequate. This project was undertaken to accomplish three goals: to select suitable polymer materials, to adjust the sensor installation design to make it more successful, and to develop a system for evaluating new materials as they become available. This report is part of Research Study 2039, "Investigation of Bonding Materials for Piezoelectric Traffic Monitoring Equipment, "funded by the Texas Department of Transportation for the Center for Transportation Research (CTR) at The University of Texas at Austin. This volume is intended to assist TxDOT in the implementation of the findings of this project.
