This report, The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) has prioritized developing technologies that promote traffic safety and improve mobility for all travelers. Supporting that USDOT priority, the Exploratory Advanced Research (EAR) Program of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) explores the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine-learning technology within the surface transportation sector. By working with universities, private companies, and public entities conducting cutting-edge research in these fields, FHWA ultimately seeks to make surface transportation safer and more efficient.
