Abstract:Of the 42,939 motor vehicle traffic fatalities in 2021, there were 17,103 (40%) that occurred in rural areas, 25,598 (60%) in urban areas, and 238 (1%) in areas that were not reported as rural or urban. This fact sheet for 2021 compares rural and urban motor vehicle traffic fatalities, covering the following topics: crash characteristics; drivers; speeding; alcohol; restraint use; rollover crashes; nonoccupants; and data by state.
