Abstract:This fact sheet covers estimates of alcohol-impaired driving by state. Of the 42,939 traffic fatalities in 2021 there were an estimated 13,384 people (31%) killed in alcohol-impaired-driving crashes. The highest percentage was in Montana (44%), followed by Texas (42%). Of the 60,904 drivers involved in fatal traffic crashes in 2021 there were an estimated 12,762 (21%) who were alcohol impaired. The percentages of alcohol-impaired drivers involved in fatal traffic crashes ranged from 14 percent (Georgia and Mississippi) to 34 percent (Montana). Based on BAC test results of the 60,904 drivers involved in fatal traffic crashes in 2021 there were 23,055 (38%) with known BAC test results. The percentages of drivers with known BAC test results among all drivers involved in fatal traffic crashes ranged from 9 percent (Mississippi) to 81 percent (South Dakota). BAC test results were known for 59 percent of drivers who were killed compared to 21 percent of surviving drivers in fatal traffic crashes in 2021. The State alcohol-impaired-driving fatality rate per 100 million vehicle miles traveled (VMT) in 2021 ranged from a low of 0.23 (Minnesota and Utah) to a high of 0.77 (Montana). The national rate was 0.43. Puerto Rico had a fatality rate of 0.84 but was not included in the national average.
