Abstract:Travel time reliability has direct economic impacts on the decisions of logistics firms and delivery vehicles, and the service levels ultimately experienced by shippers, firms, and consumers. Underlying all measures of travel time reliability is the variability of travel times experienced along individual links, by various modes, at junctions and intermodal terminals, and through the individual trajectories of travelers and goods. Multiple challenges can arise in estimating travel time distributions for any path in a given network with variable travel times. This reference brings together modern advances in data availability and probabilistic modeling techniques to overcome these challenges, and synthesize travel time distributions at the path level in generalized networks. These may include different facility types and potentially modal services along a particular path. This reference provides an overview of the methodology and tools that can be applied to successfully synthesize and replicate traveler- based travel time distributions along continuous paths, regardless of facility type.
