Abstract:A statistical projection of traffic fatalities for the first half of 2024 shows an estimated 18,720 people died in motor vehicle traffic crashes, a decrease of about 3.2 percent compared to 19,330 fatalities projected for the first half of 2023 (Early Estimate of Motor Vehicle Traffic Fatalities in 2023, Report No. DOT HS 813 561), as shown in Table 1. The second quarter of 2024 represents the ninth consecutive quarterly decline in fatalities beginning with the second quarter of 2022. Preliminary data reported by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) shows that vehicle miles traveled (VMT) in the first half of 2024 increased by about 13.1 billion miles, or about a 0.8-percent increase.
