The purpose of this booklet is to supply teachers with information on the history, present operation, and problems of our merchant shipping. The inclusion of this material in the social studies curriculum provides a means through which students may gain pertinent knowledge and understanding of an important phase of one of our current economic problems. To assist teachers in correlating the subject of the Merchant Marine with other economic, historical, and geographical problems, this booklet is divided into two parts. The first gives a brief history of the United States Merchant Marine. The second discusses its relation to industry, labor, foreign trade, Government, and national defense.
