Abstract:This report covers the operations of the War Shipping Administration from its creation on February 7, 1942, through the end of hostilities, and up to December 31, 1945. It attempts to evaluate the part that our Merchant Marine played in the victory of the United Nations. The War Shipping Administration is already near the end of its postwar assignment, the return of servicemen from overseas. It will return vessels to their owners within a short time. Congress is in the final stages of perfecting legislation to dispose of the Government-built merchant fleet. On March 2nd, 19946, the United Maritime Authority will dissolve the United Nations merchant shipping pool. These actions will end the period of Government operation of the wartime merchant fleet.
