Abstract:Librarian Jennifer Herron with the Michigan DOT Library presents an overview of predatory publishers. Herron’s interest began with looking at predatory mobile phone applications that pretended to be medical devices and evolved into learning about predatory publishers. There are three main types of predatory publishers: oblivious offender, phisher, and hijacker. Some predatory journals are new publications with good intentions that don’t understand the importance of peer-review and other elements that go into making a good research journal. This TLR includes examples of how to identify a hijacked journal. Herron also shares tips for authors to avoid falling for predatory publishing practices.
