Abstract:The Cumberland Gap, which measures 1,304 feet in altitude, is Nature's passage through the Cumberland Mountains between Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia. The Cumberland Gap served as an important passage for many settlers moving west, but its popularity declined due to the establishment of other routes. Railroads later bypassed the Cumberland Gap. The arrival of the automobile rekindled interest in using the Gap and new roads and tunnels were built. The Federal Highway Administration has since replaced the dangerous Gap road and restored the terrain.
