Abstract:When an Automated Highway System (AHS) is deployed, its design and operational attributes will differ considerably depending on whether or not commercial and transit vehicles are accounted for. This activity analyzes the implications of commercial and transit operations on an AHS. The physical characteristics of large vehicles are analyzed with regard to differences they may cause in AHS design and operation. The influence of operational issues, such as differences in acceleration and braking, on facility design are considered. Human issues, such as acceptance by passenger car occupants, safety, comfort, and actual versus perceived risks, are examined. Issues related to the expected number of heavy vehicles which would use AHS are addressed. Social and political issues related to transit use of AHS are addressed. It is recommended that these issues be weighed along with technical issues as AHS planning proceeds.
