This manual describes the basic principles and state-of-the-practice analysis, design procedures and construction procedures for shallow foundations in soil and rock with particular application to transportation facilities. The main topics covered in this manual include: • bearing capacity analysis for shallow foundations in cohesive and cohesionless soils; • settlement analysis for shallow foundations in cohesive and cohesionless soils; • tolerable settlement considerations; • spread footing and mat foundation design procedures • bearing capacity and settlement analysis for shallow foundations in rock; and • special considerations for shallow foundation in difficult grounds including expansive soils, collapsible soils, karst terrains, and liquefiable sands. • Inspection and construction monitoring methods for shallow foundations.
