Abstract:This report describes the thickness design of roadway shoulders and is based on mechanistic principles of stress/strain analysis. Both flexible and rigid shoulders can be designed with this method. The shoulders may be adjacent to either rigid or flexible pavements. All combinations are possible, including the use of a widened rigid mainline lane with a· flexible shoulder. Traffic analysis includes both encroaching and parked traffic. The inner and outer edges are designed using fatigue distress functions and stress/strains resulting from encroaching and parked vehicles. The design method includes a small interactive micro-computer program to evaluate the expected life of trial design sections. A mainframe version of this program is also provided for batch processing. Drainage design is also included, as is the evaluation of the adequacy of the proposed design. The Executive Summary is FHWA/RD-86/088, and the Structural Design of Roadway Shoulders - Final Report is FHWA/RD-86/089. 18.
