Abstract:This on-site investigation focused on the origin and severity of a fire that initiated in the drive axle area of an in-transit motorcoach. The motorcoach was a 1995 Motor Coach Industries (MCI) Model 102-DL3. The motorcoach had a 55-passenger capacity and was occupied by a male driver and 40 adult passengers at the time of the incident. While traveling on an interstate roadway, the passengers heard a loud noise, detected smoke, and alerted the driver to a potential problem. The driver brought the motorcoach to a controlled stop on the right shoulder of the interstate several miles south of where the passengers initially reported the potential problem. The driver ordered the immediate evacuation of the motorcoach. All passengers exited safely without injury. Numerous cellular calls were placed to the emergency response system to request police and firefighting assistance. The local fire department responded to the call and extinguished the fire. The fire consumed the back exterior of the motorcoach and spread to the interior of the vehicle, causing extensive damage to the entire passenger compartment.
