Abstract:ODOT funded this study to investigate maintenance scheduling practices in the US and search for potential software systems that are capable of alleviating the challenges of maintenance scheduling. The project conducted a national scan and extensive agency outreach to evaluate existing approaches. It further completed interviews with ODOT staff and developed a set of criteria for a maintenance scheduling system. An initial list of potential vendors was narrowed down to three that appeared to meet the detailed requirements developed through this research, and software demonstrations were scheduled with all three. Across vendors, the software was distributed as a software-as-a-service, resulting in an annual price which may depend on the number of users. Some vendors have existing licensing agreements with ODOT, which may carry over for this use case. Further studies should be conducted to assess the costs and savings, including of workforce hours, of adopting the solution identified in this report. Additionally, consideration for developing an in-house solution should be assessed.
