Abstract:This study is a follow-up from the initial paper examining the impact of waiving annual cognitive screening for HIV-positive airmen in favor of a 5-year special issuance. The preliminary analysis indicated that this approach would miss 4.5% of cognitive screening failures, with only 1% impacting certification outcomes. Subsequent literature warned of the potential 20-50% prevalence of HIV-induced neurocognitive dysfunction. The study reevaluates these findings, considering new literature suggesting comorbidities, more common in HIV patients, as primary drivers of cognitive impairment.
