Abstract:Traffic management systems (TMSs) and their operating centers, known as traffic management centers (TMCs), support real-time and offline functions, services, actions, activities, and related tasks or decisions (e.g., administrative and operational). In this context, decision-support tools (DSTs) are not generally used as stand-alone solutions; rather, DSTs are deployed and integrated with specific subsystems (e.g., software subsystems and data subsystems) of a TMS. (Depending on the requirements and how a TMS uses a tool, it may be integrated with the software of a specific subsystem, component, or device.) This report supports agencies in planning, developing, and improving their use of DSTs and decision-support methods already in use or being considered for the next generation of TMSs and TMCs. It identifies issues and opportunities for agencies to consider in exploring potential opportunities for the use of DSTs in enhancing the capability and performance of TMSs and supporting information sharing with other systems, agencies, and service providers and the traveling public.
