Actually, it is a complex project-expensive in dollars and in talented and dedicated manpower both within Public Roads and throughout the Nation. It rests on a firm foundation of factual information provided by you over a period of several years. It is supplemented by related data gathered by a wide variety of agencies, and it involves the use of the most modern equipment in was that perhaps the designer did not fully envision. In the beginning and to a lesser extent even today, the concept of this project had to be molded to the capabilities of computer equipment. Since the Urban Planning Division in the Office of Planning of Public Roads was already committed to the largest available computers with a definite need to enlarge their capabilities, it seemed logical to assume that the development of procedures to plan a nationwide transportation system would benefit urban areas and vice versa.
