Abstract:The report summarizes the results of an experiment, sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration and carried out at the Maine Facility, which examined the effectiveness of several alternative sign configurations (both warning and regulatory) for warning motorists of a hazardous horizontal curve ahead in rural two-lane situations. The principal findings were that: in spite of relatively large decreases in speed in the vicinity of the curve, no sign configuration was found to be consistently more effective than another, nor could the cause of the speed decreases that were measured necessarily be attributed to the signs, per se.
