Abstract:This report presents data which can be used in the evaluation of the highway safety performance of the States. The data were submitted by the States through the Highway Performance Monitoring System operated by the Federal Highway Administration. The traffic accident statistics for 1989 show a decrease of about 1500 fatalities from 1988. A disproportionate share of these fatalities occurred on Federal-Aid Secondary and non-Federal-Aid rural highways. The overall fatality rate per 100 million vehicle miles of travel was 2.16, which was lower than the record low of 2.32 set in 1988.
