Abstract:A number of state highway agencies (States) have permitted telecommunications to be located longitudinally along freeway rights-of-way (RO\V). In two instances, the States have traded such longitudinal access to obtain Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) infrastructure. The experiences of these two States can provide valuable information for other States considering longitudinal accommodation. This information is valuable whether a State is considering cash, barter, or no compensation for permitting the access. The experiences of these two States also raised a number of issues and questions for the FHW A to consider regarding utility accommodation policies.
