Abstract:This publication compiles materials from a training program for interpreting data produced by the falling-weight deflectometer, a device that may gradually replace previous conventional methods for analyzing the structure and condition of existing pavements. The subjects covered include pavement response (basic theory including deflection, stain, and stress), empirical and mechanistic-empirical methods of pavement design, background and characteristics of the deflectometer and its measurements, backcalculation of material properties, and applications of the instrument in the context of revised AASHTO methods for overlay design.
