Abstract:The Ohio Department of Public Safety is pleased to present the 2009 Ohio Traffic Crash Facts Book, an indepth highway safety statistical profile and analysis compiled from data supplied by law enforcement agencies from across the state. This annual report provides a comprehensive look at the driving habits of Ohioans. It also helps the Ohio Department of Public Safety and local law enforcement agencies determine priorities and allocate resources to improve highway safety in Ohio. Traffic deaths on Ohio’s highways last year were at a historic low, representing the safest year on record for those traveling the state’s highways – a total of 1,022 fatalities. Alcohol-related fatalities and the number of people who died unbelted on Ohio’s roads also declined, but there is always more work to be done. We also witnessed a 23 percent decrease in motorcycle fatalities in 2009 after seeing a 35 percent increase between 2006 and 2008 on Ohio’s roads.
