Abstract:This project supported the efforts of Florida’s Safe Mobility for Life Coalition (SMFLC) to meet the aims outlined in Florida’s Aging Road User Strategic Safety Plan (ARUSSP), which include increasing aging road users’ safety and mobility. To better understand aging road users’ transportation-related behaviors and attitudes, a statewide online survey of Floridians aged 50 and older was conducted. The 2020-2021 Safe Mobility for Life Survey, which received 4,275 respondents, was a follow-up and extension of a similar survey conducted in 2017. The 2020-2021 survey revealed that most respondents found it easy to get where they need or want to go and that driving was, by far, their primary transportation mode, followed by walking and getting rides from family. Results also indicated that most respondents viewed driving as central to maintaining their independence and social connections and thought it would be difficult to get around if they could no longer drive. However, relatively few respondents had planned for such a time. Other survey results included the observation that respondents tended to rate their driving ability very favorably, with the lowest ratings found for driving at night. The survey also revealed that respondents reported high levels of hurricane preparedness, although some groups were less prepared and/or would require additional evacuation assistance. Regarding awareness of SMFLC, relatively few respondents had used these resources. Taken together, the results highlight the importance of promoting more planning for driving retirement, increasing Floridians’ knowledge of alternative transportation modes, promoting improvements that would make these modes more appealing, addressing gaps in hurricane preparedness, and increasing awareness of SMFLC.
