• Abstract:
  The taxi cab industry historically has played an important but little recognized role in the provision of public transportation services in urban areas. Throughout the 1970s taxi cabs reportedly accounted for twice as many revenue miles, more than a third as many passengers, and almost twice as much passenger revenue as transit bus, rail, and trolley services combined. In many small urban rural areas taxicabs have provided the only public transportation services available, and they have been an essential service for many community residents without convenient access to an automobile.
