Abstract:Full-depth reclamation (FDR) is the main approach used across Texas to rehabilitate thin roadways that are structurally damaged. With the Eagle Ford Shale boom, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) faced the need to rehabilitate many miles of pavement in energy-sector areas of the state while placing heavy traffic back on the roadway the same day as treatment. Based on promising results with same-day energy-sector traffic placed on an asphalt-treated FDR pilot project, this research project planned, designed, and constructed 12 test sections in coordination with TxDOT district staff using foamed asphalt or emulsion. The results showed that FDR with these treatments can offer a viable solution for rehabilitating pavements with rapid project delivery time and generally successful early opening to traffic. The results also showed the 200 ksi modulus assumption reasonable for pavement design with these FDR layers. Based on this project and input from stakeholders, multiple approaches exist for using these asphalt-based FDR tools within maintenance operations. Not all distressed pavements are candidates for asphalt-based FDR, so to assist stakeholders in developing successful applications of these technologies, this project provided technical guidance and workflow forms as separate deliverables to help define the best practices and processes for setting up an FDR project.
