Abstract:On October 3, 2016, ODOT was notified that a bridge over Lake Rockwell on State Route 14 (POR 14-0630) appeared to have settled. ODOT personnel traveled to the site within hours and closed the bridge. Review by ODOT revealed that 12 steel H-piles supporting the two piers had buckled near the waterline. Based on the severity of damage, ODOT decided that the bridge needed to be closed until a new bridge could be constructed. The failure of the H-piles was speculated to be caused by an overloaded vehicle illegally crossing the bridge. The goal of the project was to determine the magnitude of the load necessary to cause the failure of the piles.
