Abstract:This report presents an overview of reported road traffic crashes in Queensland for the year
ended 31 December 2002 in the context of the previous five years, based on data contained in
the Queensland Road Crash Information System maintained by Queensland Transport's Land
Transport and Safety Division. Chapter 1 analyses 2002 crash outcomes in terms of past trends, other states of Australia, and the increase in population and vehicles, and outlines the key road safety initiatives and future directions of the Queensland Road Safety Action Plan. Chapter 2 provides information on serious casualties in terms of their gender, age and the type of road user. Chapter 3 looks at the various units involved in crashes. Chapter 4 looks at crash outcomes in terms of what happened, the nature of crashes, single and multi-vehicle type crashes, the time of day and day of the week crashes occurred. Chapter 5 explores the factors that contributed to crashes and their severity, including alcohol, speed, fatigue and seat belt usage.
