Abstract:

Traffic congestion is an inevitable part of urban transportation networks and its mitigation requires expertise (of Traffic Management Center operators) and proper detection coverage of the network. The traffic information is often collected with high temporal and spatial resolutions and retrieved from multiple sources. This project focuses on retrieval and analysis of traffic data from various sources and delivering this information, in form of a map, to traffic management operators. The online traffic platform, named Mapping Evaluation Tool (MET), has been developed. A variety of field traffic data were collected, processed, and analyzed. Multiple scripts are developed to populate the database within the MET. The methods are developed to perform trend-analysis and to infer meaningful statistics. The additional set of scripts is developed to allow an operator to run a variety of queries through a web interface. The extracted information is presented on the underlying maps and within the easy-to-read graphs. The proposed framework is robust and scalable enough to handle any data set that might be available in the future and to incorporate any additional performance metrics and graph representation.
