Abstract:The purpose of our research was to test different strategies for establishing and maintaining wildflowers in roadside stands. The objective of the first study was to determine the interacting effects of (1) wildflower seeding rates and (2) spatial segregation of wildflower seeds on establishment of wildflowers on backslopes of roadsides (Experiment 1). A second study was conducted to determine the effect of seeding backslopes with the Type A mixture, with and without subplots of high-density seeding of wildflowers (wildflower islands; Experiment 2). The objective of a third study was to determine the interacting effects of (1) interseeding wildflowers into established stands on roadside backslopes and (2) the timing of mowing of the stands as the drilled wildflowers are establishing (Experiment 3).
