• Abstract:
  State Departments of Transportation (DOTs) need road ice condition forecasts to enhance public safety and awareness. This research was divided into two areas, Task 1 Development of IcyRoad Model and Task 2 Validation of the Ice Formula. Task 1 - A statewide IcyRoad model has been developed, tested, and refined during winter 2020-2021 using Montana Road Weather Information System (RWIS) measurements. The hourly road ice forecast accuracy improved from 62% to 82%. Task 2 -The formula does not appear to hold true with this dataset, but principal component analysis (PCA) of hyper-spectral data can identify, water, ice, and snow in comparison to dry asphalt.
