  • Abstract:
In 2003, the death rate on Nebraska roadways was 1.6 persons killed per 100 million vehicle miles traveled. The death rate in Nebraska, from 1961 to 2003 is represented in Figure 1 (Page 2). Even though the death rate fluctuates from year to year, there has been a general downward trend. Much of this reduction can be attributed to improvements in vehicle design, roadway engineering, emergency medical services, specific safety programs, enforcement and improved driver awareness. Figure 2 (Page 2) depicts the number of fatal crashes per year for the last ten years. There were 257 fatal crashes in 2003, fifteen less than were recorded in 2002. Fatal accidents make up only a small portion of the total crashes in Nebraska. Property damage only (PDO) crashes make up the majority. Figure 3 shows the percentage distribution of all crash types. In 2003, there were 257 fatal crashes, 14,756 injury crashes and 31,589 property damage only crashes. Fatal crashes made up .6% of all accidents, and injury and PDO crashes made up 31.7% and 67.7%, respectively.
