Abstract:The purpose of this research was to develop a sensor array capable of identifying the location of acoustic sources. The sensor array was constructed from a polymer known as PVDF. The array was created using an etching technique similar to that used for printed circuit boards. An amplifier was designed and built for this array. A microprocessor controlled digital logic board was built that was capable of analyzing the output from up to 16 pre-amplifiers. The logic board was capable of analyzing the output from a 4 by 4 sensor array as an acoustic wave traversed the sensor elements. A number of trials with the sensor-array and associated electronics showed that it was capable of identifying the direction of a number of sources.
