Unbonded portland cement concrete (PCC) overlays are a feasible rehabilitation alternative for PCC pavements in practically any condition because the performance of unbonded overlays is relatively insensitive to the condition of the existing pavements. In addressing unbonded PCC overlays, this Technical Brief discusses general design considerations, evaluation of the existing pavement condition, preoverlay repair, structural design, job-site considerations, and performance of unbonded overlays. The discussion on structural design covers thickness design, separator layer design, joint spacing, and load transfer design.
