Abstract:Immigration promises to make the United States a more heterogeneous nation. For the first time since the early 1900’s, immigrants comprise more than 10 percent of the U.S. population, a total of 32 million people (U.S. Census Bureau, February 2003). The national origins of immigrants have changed over the past few decades — with a significant increase in the number of Hispanic immigrants. According to the 2000 Census, nearly half (49.8%) of recent immigrants, those who have been in the U.S. for 3 years or less, are Hispanic.
