Abstract:Daily vehicle travel contributes to global warming through the simple act of combusting petroleum (e.g. gasoline and diesel fuel), which releases carbon dioxide (CO2), a potent greenhouse gas, into the air. Carbon dioxide accounts for over 80 percent of total greenhouse gas emissions in the United States, and transportation sources account for nearly one-third of that total. Methods used to decrease toxic pollutant emissions, such as requiring unleaded gasoline and catalytic converters, have no effect on the amount of CO2 produced by vehicle travel.
