Abstract:Pavement evaluation data, especially pavement coring data, is a very valuable asset that reveals in-service pavement conditions, including both surface and structures, and is indispensable in supporting various decision-making processes, such as pavement rehabilitation and design. The past paper-pencil data recording and file-based data sharing has the following issues: 1) data quality is not consistent and is difficult to control; 2) data retrieval is time-consuming and error-prone; and 3) data is difficult to share with other offices, contractors, and consultants. This research project aims to solve the above issues by developing a IT-based solution that consists of a) a GPS-based handheld device for field data collection, b) a Wi-Fi camera for capturing field photographs that are automatically integrated with handheld-collected data, c) a seamless data transfer, management, and uploading procedure, d) a GIS-based web platform that integrates pavement evaluation data with other data sources, enables other offices and contractor to share their pavement coring data, and provides functions to extract the historical pavement PACES ratings for a programmed project; also, it can estimate the remaining service life using various interactive tools. The field photograph capturing practices are also recommended to further help standardize the data collection procedure and reduce the effort for revisiting project sites.
