  The eight papers in this volume describe analyses of the ; effectiveness and use of adult seat belts, based on traffic ; accident data. All eight were written between January 1984 and ; May 1988. The topics addressed include front seat belt ; effectiveness (estimated separately for states with vs without a ; seat belt use law, for drivers vs right-front seat passengers, ; for occupants of cars vs pickup trucks, and by crash direction ; and accident year), rear seat belt effectiveness, and issues in ; estimating belt effectiveness from accident data. The principal ; accident data sources are the Fatal Accident Reporting System ; (FARS), the National Crash Severity Study (NCSS), and the ; National Accident Sampling System (NASS).
