  The Automotive Fuel Economy Program Annual Update summarizes the fuel economy performance of the vehicle fleet during 2004, and the activities of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to date, including a section summarizing current rulemaking activities. The Secretary of Transportation is required to administer a program for regulating the fuel economy of new passenger cars and light trucks in the United States market. The authority to administer the program was delegated by the Secretary to the Administrator of NHTSA, 49 C.F.R. 1.50(f)
