Abstract:In calendar year 2008, the rail transit industry provided over 18.5 billion passenger miles, a 5% increase from 2007 service numbers. Growth in ridership at the rail transit agencies in the Federal Transit Administration’s (FTA) State Safety Oversight Program far outpaces other modes of transportation. In spite of this high level of passenger service, rail transit remains among the safest modes of transportation in the United States. Yet accidents do occur on rail transit systems and their impacts are tragic. During calendar year 2008, 992 accidents occurred that met FTA accident reporting thresholds. These accidents resulted in 37 fatalities and 677 injuries (excluding suicide and trespasser fatalities). By standardizing safety data, 2008 numbers can be compared to the averages of the previous five years.
