This project will develop guidelines to perform relative, probabilistic and Quantitative Risk Assessments (QRAs) of storage wells during well entry. The project team will build on its extensive expertise of the QRA methodologies used in the pipeline and gas storage industries to review the relevant standards, including API RP 1170/1171 2015, CSA Z341 2010, ISO 16530-1, ISO 16530 2 and NORSOK 2004; summarize and extend the frameworks and models that have been applied to wells; and establish the desirable model attributes that affect accuracy and practicality for operators and regulators. With these models, operators will be able to minimize the risk of operating a storage well over its lifetime by optimizing the well entry schedule. The QRA model results to be generated during the project for a representative set of well completions and entry procedures will allow operators and regulators to develop best practices for well completion types, entry procedures and safety risk mitigation options.
