Abstract:The Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 213 sled test was originally based on the configuration and performance parameters of the 1974 Chevrolet Impala production front bench seat. This sled test was upgraded on June 24, 2003, by incorporating advanced child anthropomorphic test devices and associated injury criteria and by modifying some features of the standard seat assembly to make it more representative of rear seats of the vehicle fleet at that time. However, due to limited resources and other agency priorities, the upgrade of the standard seat assembly did not include all the recommended modifications. This report describes the upgrades to the standard seat assembly to be more representative of a current vehicle rear seat environment. The upgrades to the standard seat assembly included seat geometry, seat cushion characteristics, and anchorages locations. In addition, the report details the child restraint system fleet sled testing used to evaluate the upgraded seat assembly, which provided repeatable results in three test configurations. This report is the same as the report with the same title found in Docket NHTSA-2020-0093-0005 dated September 2016, except for minor editorial updates.
