Abstract:The rapid movement of traffic on our streets and highways in ever changing patterns is one of the most familiar and beneficial phenomena of our daily lives and at the same time one of the most confusing and vexing. The annoyances and even danger experienced in driving over congested streets and highways, the lack of places to park and, in general, the inadequacies of our highway system, are widely recognized. There is clearly a need for increased knowledge of traffic behavior in order that traffic regulation and planning may be made more scientific. The method by which scientific knowledge is increased is to observe what happens and then by inductive reasoning to establish general laws pertaining to these happenings. It is the purpose of this book to develop a scientific system known as Statistical Methods and show how to use these methods for analyzing and solving traffic problems.
