Abstract:The office of Highway Information Management (OHIM) in the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) of the U.S. Department of Transportation publishes an annual report, Highway Statistics, that presents and analyzes national transportation statistics and trends. The report is used by numerous officials throughout the Federal, State and local governments, as well as by academia and industry. The FHWA is the principal highway agency of the Federal Government while OHIM is responsible for transportation information systems and statistical analysis. As port of their mission, OHIM conducted a survey of the universe of users of the annual publication with the aim of identifying shortcomings and modifying the report to make it better utilized. OHIM designed the survey, provided a list of respondents, and subsequently contracted DRI/McGraw-Hill (DRI) to conduct the survey and tabulate the results. This report explains the OHIM survey methodology and the DRI methodology of tabulation of responses; presents the findings of the survey by type of respondent and for specific tables; and provides DRI's recommendations as a result of its review of comments and of the publication itself. The survey results are contained in several Appendices to the report as are the specific comments.
