  • Abstract:
This publication represents the 1985 compilation of accident reports submitted to the federal highway Administration's Office of Motor Carriers (OMC) by motor carriers of property in interstate or foreign commerce. These accident reports are a vital source of information upon which the OMC relies in administering its regulatory and enforcement responsibilities. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR) require accident reports to be filled whenever an accident occurs that involves a motor vehicle engaged in the interstate, foreign or intrastate operations of a motor carrier subject to the Department of Transportation Act and meets the established reporting criteria. The accident statistics reported in this publication were generated by motor carriers of property filling accident reports with the OMC. These statistics do not represent all accidents that have occurred within the regulated motor carrier industry. The statistics do not represent all accidents that have occurred within the regulated motor carrier industry. The statistics were compiled from those accidents that meet the reporting criteria as "reportable accidents." The term "reportable accident" means an occurrence involving a motor vehicle operated by a motor carrier subject to the FMSCR resulting in: (1) the death of a human being; (2) bodily injury to a person who, as a result, receives medical treatment away from the scene of the accident; and/or (3) total damage to all property aggregating in $2,000 or more based on actual cost of reliable estimates.
